BETTING ON BACCARAT

Even more important than whether you win or lose is that you know how to bet. You have three options for how you can bet in the game of Baccarat:

  • Bet on player’s hand
  • Bet on banker’s hand
  • Bet on a tie

The bets on either of these options can be as low as the table minimum or as high as the table maximum. If you’re not familiar with the game of Baccarat, consider betting the lower end of the limits until you get the hang of the game. Many casinos have high stakes betting available for certain Baccarat players.

Bet on Player

When you place your chips into the section labeled “player” in front of you on the table, you are betting on the player. You can bet any amount you’d like as long as it falls between the table minimum and maximum. If the player’s hand is greater than the dealers (and closest to 9), then all participants who bet on the player, win. In addition to that, you don’t have to pay the commission on the hand. Although the odds are lower when you bet on the player, the house advantage on this bet is less than 2%.

Bet on Banker

Betting on the banker means that you have placed your chips in the area labeled “banker” in front of you on the table. Betting on the banker gives you the best odds because everyone knows that “the house always wins”. In fact, betting on the banker in Baccarat gives you one of the lowest house advantages in most casinos with an edge of 1.01%. The banker’s hand will win if the banker’s cards are higher than the players and closest to 9. When you bet on the banker you are also getting even money, but you also have to pay five percent commission on the amount that you won.

Commission is not collected after each hand; typically it’s totaled in the croupier’s area and only paid when it’s time to reshuffle the cards or when a player is ready to leave the table. The croupier then collects the entire amount of commission you’ve accumulated during play.

Bet on Tie

When you place your chips in the area of the table marked “tie”, you have bet on a tie. A tie bet pays 8 to 1 and doesn’t require participants to pay a commission fee. You win when both player and banker has the same card total. Players that bet on player or banker when a tie occurs have their bets returned to them. If you choose, you can leave those bets for the next round or you can change your bet. Keep in mind that betting on a tie is statistically the worst bet in Baccarat with a house advantage of nearly 16%.
